3 Ways to Get Your Asthma Under Control at Home

You and your family know that asthma triggers are all around in Burleson, Texas. And you want your home to feel like as much of a sanctuary as possible. Luckily, creating an asthma-friendly home is as easy as changing your filter, managing pests and scheduling HVAC maintenance.

Change Your Air Filter

Major asthma triggers include things like:

  • Pollen.
  • Dust, dust mites, and other pests.
  • Pet hair and dander.
  • Tobacco or wood smoke.
  • Aerosol sprays like hairspray and air fresheners.
  • Biological growth.

You can keep these triggers out of your air by using a good air filter. Generally speaking, the tighter the weave on your filter, the more it can filter out of your air. Filters are rated with the MERV scale, which stands for Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value. Residential HVAC systems can handle filters with MERV ratings up to 12. The higher the rating, the better the filtration. As a result, you’ll help to get your asthma under control.

Keep Pests at Bay

Pests can include dust mites, which are tiny insects that live inside your home’s dust. These mites are a major asthma trigger, and allergic reactions can cause watery eyes and sneezing all the way to severe asthma attacks. To keep them under control, vacuum your house once a week and wash your bedding in hot water every few weeks. You should also replace any down pillows or comforters.

Another pest that can even cause asthma in young children is the dreaded cockroach. If you’ve seen any cockroaches in your home, make sure that you have a pest control expert deal with the problem first. After that, take preventive measures like throwing out any old boxes, paper bags or newspapers. Keep your trash cans covered, and don’t leave any dirty dishes, crumbs or food spills lying around.

Schedule HVAC Maintenance

Scheduling seasonal HVAC maintenance is another easy method of keeping your asthma under control. A service technician can check for any issues with airflow. They can ensure your system is running efficiently to keep fresh air circulating throughout your home.
