6 Tips for Minimizing Pet Allergies in Your Home
Just because it’s summertime in Grand Prairie, Texas, doesn’t mean we can say goodbye to allergies. Whatever the season, man’s best friend isn’t always friendly to allergy sufferers. But these tips can help ensure your pet’s dander and saliva don’t exacerbate your allergies:
Use Whole-House Air Filtration
A high-quality HVAC system, combined with a HEPA filter to catch fine particulates, is effective at improving indoor air quality. HEPA filters work to trap much tinier particles than most other types of filters. As a result, they work better to eliminate pet dander and help you breathe easier.
Choose Hard-Surface Flooring
Carpet is a magnet for pet hair, making it less-than-desirable for those with pet allergies. Select hardwood or tile floors for your home, and accent them with washable area rugs.
Keep Pets Off the Furniture
Fabric chairs and couches also attract pet hair and dander. Minimize this problem by keeping pets off the upholstered furniture and on their own beds. Don’t forget to wash those beds, slipcovers and blankets with detergents specifically designed to remove allergens.
Clean Regularly
Regardless of your flooring surface, remember to vacuum regularly. Invest in a vacuum with a HEPA filter, which will eliminate fine particles from your floor and furniture. Dust often, even in those hard-to-reach areas.
Wash Your Pets
Keeping your pets clean can significantly remove both allergens and dirt. Weekly baths are optimal. But talk with your vet about the frequency that’s best for your pet. Specialty wipes can also help remove allergens between baths.
Use UV Lights in Your HVAC System
UV lights can help remove contaminants as they pass through your HVAC system. As a result, they can help you and your pet coexist peacefully.
